True, advertisements aren't very diverse when it comes to representing the female population. Which is why I love this website. But then I read this and wondered if we aren't programmed to DESPISE skinny women? Even feminists? Maybe I should say especially feminists? As a feminist, this hurts.
"All dressed up and nothing to eat." ?
Yes, obesity is a problem in this country, but to the other 3,035,665 women who don't fit the obese mold, photos like these reflect reality. Well...reality in expensive clothing anyhow. I know that anorexia is a real disease that affects some people, but do we have to ridicule and accuse every skinny female of having a disease, just because she isn't super sized?
It makes me very sad when I see this catty remark written in bold next to the woman in the photo, because she is about the same build as me, and I do eat. Looking at her legs, I can tell you right now that I look even worse in a dress. Like sticks in a bag. So am I that much more worthy of ridicule because of my metabolism? Do you want me to hate my body? Because believe me, I've tried all my life to be an average weight, and you know what I think? It doesn't matter whether we're overweight or underweight -- Women need to stop being insecure and start liking ourselves, and no one can do it for us -- not even Adidas. So if you're feeling fat, don't take it out on me. I was born this way the same way you were born whatever way you were born to look, so let's get over our shallow self critical issues and work together as a team. We can't be putting other women down like this.
Women come in ALL shapes and sizes -- and that statement doesn't mean "Real women come in plus sizes only." We run the gamut, so let us have the occasional rail thin model to look at when we're feeling too twiggy or bummed about our bee sting breasts. And if you can manage, don't nitpick her flaws and have a conniption because she's "too skinny." This is who I am. We wouldn't dare go around calling strangers "lard ass" because we're not assholes. So lets treat those on the other end of the spectrum with dignity instead of sending the message that there's something wrong with thin women. Not all skinny folks are anorexic and I don't know any obese folks who eat twinkies slathered in lard, so let's chill with the stereotypes and be proud of what we've got! People are built differently, people are built differently, people are built differently, and women need to stop tearing each other apart -- especially women who are on the same team.
