According to my dad, a bonafide horticulture expert, plants do not have to go dormant in winter. Apparently the normal cycle of plant hibernation in our hemisphere does not improve a plant's health in any way.

I (unscientifically and with much bias) translate this to mean that we don't emerge from winter well-rested or refreshed either. If anything, cold weather is wasting our time.
This is a very good argument for going to South America every winter. Decision made!
