Had a weird experience with a drunk and flatulent young German guy who wrongly guessed my ethnicity and argued that he was superior to Americans because his family wasn't here during indigenous genocides. Being the only sober one, I had remained calm during his belligerent tirade, but his complete amnesia about the holocaust required a polite correction.
"Okay, Germany may have participated in genocide," I said.
The German fell silent. My friend laughed.
My friend and I are multiracial but the whole evening we had to endure his rant at us 'white people' which was totally nuts because he was the only actual European among us, and German even. The irony. The whole claiming superiority thing (and using indigenous people to justify his claim?) just seemed like a modern version of nazi attitudes with the addition of blame shifting.
It was annoying but I wasn't going to fight with an obvious idiot, and for some reason my friend chose him as her rebound from a recent breakup so I was in an awkward position. I didn't feel comfortable telling him I'm Indigenous Mexican AND Jewish. (Double whammy!) I just let him berate me and went to sleep.
It was irksome, especially being the day after my neighbors were watching my (black) best friend with suspicion and one asian guy rudely asked what we were doing in the lobby. Uh, I own an apartment here, dude. And I'm pretty sure black people are allowed in our building!
I'm alright though. Just a day in the life.
