Every person I know is grieving for the death of a man none of us knew, and I feel that says something about my circle of friends. Sad as it is to see everyone's morale plummet, it is reassuring to always witness such outspoken empathy demanding justice for racism, anti semitism, xenophobia, animal rights, etc.
I hope someday we equally see an end of male silence about femicide, since every day 3 more women in the U.S. are murdered by male partners. I have hope that empathy can extend not only beyond color/ religion/species, but also, beyond one's gender.
RIP George Floyd, and RIP the under-acknowledged 1,600 women killed by men in 2018 according to Women Count USA. In 2017, 1611 of 1759 female homicide victims were killed by a man they knew. On average, 92% of female murder victims were murdered by men. Say their names, or do black lives only matter when they are male?
