Today I'm grateful to have made someone feel better who has survived incredibly terrifying trauma. I'm grateful she trusted me to share her story with me, because it gave me much needed perspective and a deeper understanding of a part of the world that is forbidden to me and most westerners, but she shared deeply personal events and feelings with me that moved me to the core and made me feel honored that she trusted an outsider of her culture to share it with. She said she trusts me like a sister.
Actually, now that I think of it, most people who connect with me tend to be from different countries or cultures than myself. I have a sort of gift for the ability to connect with people from different backgrounds, probably originating from my intense interest in learning new things, and maybe my own mixed background has a little bit to do with it. Meeting people from Afghanistan, Nigeria, Mongolia, etc is almost like traveling to these places and learning first hand knowledge from locals. And I do love travel. And I love listening to stories! Fresh perspectives feed my soul and broaden my own views. I'm addicted to learning in every way I can. I'm just grateful to have so many willing teachers, teachers who actually think it is me who is helping them, when I feel it's the other way around. Mutual learning is the best kind.
