Today I'm grateful for saffron! I make a tincture with it whenever I want a natural antidepressant. It's easy to make and it works! Here's the recipe for a 30 day dose:
Put 1 gram of saffron in a one ounce dropper bottle.
Add 1 tablespoon of boiling water.
Let the saffron steep for several hours.
Now add 1 tablespoon of distilled alcohol. (gin, vodka, brandy, whiskey, or everclear)
18 drops of this per day is equivalent to the dose of saffron used in research studies which is as effective as pharmaceutical antidepressants! It's safe, healthy, and DELICIOUS added to coffee, rose tea, or ice cream!
I use an extra tiny funnel for pouring, and a chopstick to push the saffron in. I don't worry about precise measurements because it always seems to work regardless, and saffron is safe and non addictive.
It works best if you take a dose per day every day for one month. I usually take it every day until I run out, and by then I feel good enough without it for a couple months. Whenever I want another mood boost, I make another tincture. Cheap, effective, and easy. I've done a lot of research on natural herbal antidepressants, and this one is my favorite. I've been prescribing it to myself as needed for over a year now, whenever I feel blah. (I just made one tonight to survive the rest of winter.)
I really like the perfumed blend of saffron and rose in middle eastern desserts, and the flavor of saffron in general. Tinctures tend to be too strong-tasting, but this one actually improves the taste of anything I add it to. I'd marry it if I could.
